Recent media reports suggest pushback by small businesses against a new federal law making millions of Americans eligible for overtime pay.

According to USA Today,

“The nation’s leading small business trade group on Tuesday asked the Labor Department to delay a new rule making millions of Americans eligible for overtime pay, saying employers aren’t prepared to implement it when it goes into effect Dec. 1.

“In many cases, small businesses must reorganize their work forces and implement new systems for tracking hours, record keeping, and reporting,” says NFIB president Juanita Duggan. “They can’t just flip a switch and be in compliance.”

The group is asking for a delay until June 1.

But in a statement, David Weil, administrator of Labor’s wage and hour division, says officials provided businesses 190 days to comply, “more than three times what’s legally required.” He added, “The December 1 implementation date is a sufficient amount of time (more than six months) for employers to adjust to the new salary level.”

Putting any political arguments aside, this transition need not be so difficult for small businesses. What they do need to make this a success, however, is a time tracking system that benefits both employers and staff.

With this change in law it is time to stop your employees saying that they can’t or don’t want to fill out a timesheet because it is too hard to use. Or the system is to slow. Or the system is too complicated. The best timesheet system is one that makes it really easy for the end user. A good timesheet will require employees to simply state they spent five hours (or however long) doing a specific task and two hours doing another task. A good timesheet is that simple and that easy.

A good timesheet system has to be reliable, secure, and accurate

If your company is considering using paper timesheets to track overtime think about this: a piece of paper fails the reliability test. You can lose a piece of paper. That’s bad enough but it also means it fails the security test. And it definitely fails the accuracy test. In two words: paper fails.
